Keffer, bambochard couche-tard, oiseau de nuit aguerri, flashe le monde souterrain de la fête pour en sortir des instantanés de folie qu’il compile dans des séries.

Pour la sortie du 3ème épisode de cette épopée nocturne qu’est « Jour de nuit », Keffer nous explique sa fascination pour les « sheitan » de la nuit et sa relation avec les jolies filles qu’il shoote.

Ado, un ami de son père lui file un cd avec Photoshop, il l’installe et ne décroche plus. Il sèche les cours, loupe son bac, monte à Paris et dégote illico un job de DA web. Puis, quelques années après, il s’intéresse au street art et se paye un compact à la con pour shooter son boulot. Cet objet annonce les prémices d’une passion en devenir: la photo. Passion pour laquelle il lâche son taf de DA pour se lancer en pro. Culotté le garçon mais maintenant comment ça se passe?

On te connaît beaucoup pour tes photos de nuit, à quel moment as-tu embarqué ton appareil en teuf ?

Mon pote Guillaume Le Donche (à la tête du label Youngunz) est devenu DA de chez Regine’s, j’ai commencé à squatter pour picoler, puis je me disais qu’il s’y passait des trucs trop cool, qu’il fallait que je prenne des photos. Je sortais tous les soirs, je balançais des photos sur mon site « The Night Day » tous les matins. C’est devenu une grosse vitrine de mon boulot même si je continuais mes portraits plus « posés » (à voir ici) à côté. J’ai fini par en sélectionner quelques unes pour en faire des séries appelées « Jour de nuit ».

Qu’est ce qui te plait dans la nuit ?

La déshinibition, la folie des gens, il n’y a que la nuit qui apporte ça. Je n’aime pas les gens qui sourient, la beauté du monde, Yann Arthus Bertrand. J’aime bien le côté « sheitan » des gens de la nuit. Ça peut être hyper sexuel.

Et puis, techniquement parlant, je préfère travailler le noir plutôt que le blanc. Le blanc me casse les couilles.

Et quel est selon toi, le milieu le plus foufou à paris ?

Le milieu « fetich » ou le milieu gay m’ont offert de très beaux clichés. Une soirée club sandwich chez Castel pour Halloween, ça n’arrive qu’une fois dans l’année ! Mais finalement, ça dépend. Chez Regine’s c’était blindé de fils à papa et pourtant c’était la folie.

Aujourd’hui les photographes de soirées sont partout, comment tu te positionnes ?

J’en fais de moins en moins. Il y a 4 ans c’était cool, on était 6 ou 7 photographes à prendre des photos en club. Say Who n’existait pas encore. Du coup il y avait une certaine liberté, on pouvait faire ce qu’on voulait.

Est-ce que c’est toujours aussi excitant de prendre des photos ?

Ce qui a niqué un peu le truc, c’est facebook ! Les gens ont peur d’être tagués alors qu’avant ils en avaient rien à faire. Donc maintenant je prends en photos les gens qui me connaissent.

For the release of the third episode of the nocturnal saga that is The Night Day, Keffer explains his fascination for those to whom nightlife is real life and his relationships with the pretty girls he shoots.

As a teenager, a friend of his father’s gave him a cd with Photoshop. He installed it, and never turned it off. He skipped his classes, flunked out of high school, moved to Paris and immediately landed himself a job as an artistic director on a website. Then, after a few years, he became interested in street art and paid off an artist to let him shoot while he worked. This object staked the base for his developing passion: photography. A passion for which he left his job to become a pro. A bold move; how’s it going now?

You’re well known for your night photos. When did you first bring your camera to a party?

My buddy Guillaume Le Donche (who runs the label Youngunz) became the artistic director of Chez Regine’s, I started squatting the bar, just to drink, but I noticed that there were cool things going on, things worth shooting. I went out every night and posted photos on my site ‘The Night Day’ every morning. It became a huge showcase for my work, even though I kept taking more ‘posed’ photographs (check them out here) on the side. I ended up selecting a few of them to make the The Night Day series.

What do you like about the night?

The lack of inhibitions, the way people become manic: it only comes out at night. I don’t like smiling people, the beauty of the world, Yann Arthus Bertrand. I like the demonic energy that comes out of night owls. It can be hypersexual.

Also, speaking technically, I prefer working with black more than white. White breaks my balls.

What do you think is the craziest scene in Paris?

The ‘fetish’ scene and the gay scene have offered up some great snaps. A Club Sandwich night at Castel for Halloween only happens once a year! But really, it depends. Chez Regine’s was packed with rich kids, but it was insane.

There are party photographers everywhere these days, where do you fit in?

I’ve been doing it less and less. Four years ago it was cool, there were 6 or 7 of us taking photos in clubs. Say Who didn’t exist yet. There was a kind of freedom, we could do whatever we wanted.

Is taking photos still as exciting?

Facebook fucked everything up a bit! People are afraid of being tagged whereas before they didn’t worry about it. So now I take photos of people who know me.

T’arrives à faire la fête sans penser photo ?

Il y a un moment non. Le fait de faire des photos me faisait sortir. C’était une motivation, je passais mon temps en soirée mais je ne m’amusais pas avec mes potes. Alors que c’était juste pour moi, je n’étais pas payé donc j’ai trouvé une alternative, je prends des photos au début et à la fin, pas au milieu.

Tu parlais de deshinibition, il y a beaucoup de nanas qui se déshabillent devant ton objectif. Tu fais comment ?

Déjà je le fais de moins en moins même si c'est une partie super plaisante pour moi. Souvent il y a l’alcool qui joue même si je n’ai jamais pris en photo quelqu’un d’ivre mort, hein. Et je prépare le terrain, j'explique, c'est hyper rapide, elle me fait confiance ou non pour 10 minutes et se lache, ça fait partie de la folie de la soirée.

Tu conclues grâce à ça ?

Beaucoups de gens pensent que j'en profite pour chopper un maximum de filles avec ça, mais il y'a la photo et le reste, Jour De Nuit c'est pour la photo, uniquement, et les bons clichés n'arrivent qu'avec la frustration, faire passer toute la tension sexuelle par la photo.

Et tu n’as jamais eu une fille qui a regretté ?

En 4 ans, jamais personne ne m’a demandé de retirer les photos.

Quel type de moment est-ce que tu cherches en club ?

Je n’ai jamais rien cherché, j’ai toujours eu la chance d’être là au bon moment et au bon endroit. Que ce soit pour les clubs ou les portraits, je bosse toujours à l’instinct . Ce que je cherche c’est « la vraie vie » et jour de nuit c’est un peu le paroxysme de ça, je regarde même plus l’appareil photo quand je shoote.

Tu vas arrêter The Night Day ?

C’est le projet d’une vie. Je le ferai moins assidument mais je n’arrêterai pas.

Quelle est la photo la plus représentative de ton boulot ?

Celle qui est sur mes flyers et que j’ai shooté pendant une soirée Andrea Crews chez Regine’s. Je suis sur la banquette avec ma nana et là ça part en vrille sur scène, j’ai commencé à flasher et j’ai découvert ça en rentrant chez moi. Fou.

Are you able to party without thinking about the photos?

For a while I wasn’t. I only went out to take photos. It was a motivation, I spent all my time at parties but I wasn’t having fun with my friends. I was doing it for myself and I wasn’t being paid, so I found an alternative: I took photos at the beginning and the end, but not in the middle.

You mentioned the lack of inhibition – a lot of girls have undressed in front of your lens. How do you do it?

I’ve been doing less and less of it, even if, I’ll admit, it was a huge turn-on. There’s usually alcohol involved even if I’ve never taken photos of anyone dead drunk, yeah. And of course the chatter, the conversation that makes the girls completely unafraid.

You think that’s why?

People think that I’m a huge womanizer, but I’m definitely the opposite, I’ve never tried anything. But a posteriori…

And you’ve never had a girl regret her shoot?

In 4 years, no one has ever asked me to take down the photos.

What kind of moment do you look for in a club?

I’ve never looked for anything, I’ve always had the good luck to be there at the right place and the right time. Whether in for clubs or portraits, I work on instinct. What I’m looking for is ‘real life’, and the night day is the climax of that. I don’t even look at the camera anymore while I’m shooting.

Will you stop doing The Night Day?

I’ll be doing it less seriously but I won’t be stopping.

What photo best represents your work?

The one that is on my flyers. I shot it during an Andrea Crews party at Regine’s. I am on the bench rolling a coin to my girlfriend and all of the sudden things went off the wall; I started to flash and found the photo when I got home. Crazy
